Sclerotherapy uses a saline solution, or sclerosant, to irritate damage veins. The solution is injected into the affected vein with a tiny needle, which causes the vein to become sticky. Patients then wear a compression bandage over the treatment area in order to push the walls of the damaged vein together. The sclerosant causes the two sides of the vein to stick together, cutting off blood flow and eventually causing the vein to die.
